Where Are They Now? Catching Up With Kehila Graduates

Kehila opened 18 years ago to widen our community's educational opportunities. The founders spent two years researching Jewish schools across North America to bring back the most inspiring curriculum and best teaching practices. Here's what some of graduates are doing now:
Leeav Lipton: Leeav graduated from Toronto University's Department of Astrophysics and Astronomy. He was hand-picked to help build SuperBIT, a high altitude balloon-borne telescope, designed to measure dark matter distribution around more than 100 galaxy clusters.
"Kehila's small classes were a great experience for me. We covered far more content and when I went on to public school, my English, French and Math skills were academically way ahead of students in my year."
Sarah Goldberg: Sarah is currently in Israel, interning in fashion design. She also runs her own Judaica fabric design company, sarahtova.com.
"Kehila encouraged my sense of adventure, nurturing my artistic skills and out-of-the-box thinking. All the teachers were accommodating and able to address my Individual Education Program learning needs. The staff was always there for me and I was never scared or intimidated to ask for help."
Amiel Kollek: Amiel is studying Mathematics and Computer Science at McGill University. This summer he'll be working at Facebook's headquarters in San Francisco as a software engineering intern, one of only 400 picked worldwide each year.
"I was in one the first group at Kehila and our grades were usually combined. Being with kids a bit older gave me a big advantage; I was always learning material a few years above my age and this forced me to pick up new concepts quickly."
Talia Kollek: Talia graduates this year with an A average in History from McMaster University. She landed an opportunity to pursue her passion for Soviet History and Russian at the School of Higher Economics in Moscow this fall.
"Kehila gave me a strong Jewish identity and the education was excellent. I was years ahead of my peers when I transitioned to public school."
Ethan Rogers: Ethan is an honours graduate of the George Brown Advanced Culinary Apprenticeship Program, and working towards his Red Seal Chef Certification at Toronto's Barbarian's Steak House.
"Kehila taught me the importance of community, family and culture. In an environment that respects these values, you learn more, build character, and make life-long friends."

Students are in the process of developing knowledge and skills to appreciate, comprehend, communicate and interact in French, one of Canada's official languages. They are learning to use the language not only to express needs and interests, but to use it also as the medium through which they can acquire and apply knowledge in a variety of subject areas.
The knowledge of two or more languages enhances cognitive development as well as problem-solving and creative-thinking skills. It also nurtures self-confidence in overall learning and in interacting with others in positive, socially acceptable and effective ways. Students will discover that they need to focus closely on how to interpret what others are trying to communicate to them as well as on what they are trying to communicate to others through oral and eventually written forms. This promotes supportive, collegial social attributes towards the ultimate goal to educate children to become life-long learners and responsible, contributing citizens.
So the next time you enter Kehila, get ready to say, "Shalom", "Hello" and "Bonjour"!url clone | Nike React Element 87

We look forward to another successful year at Kehila JCDS.
This year Kehila is pleased to announce that we have added specialized staff to provide 1:1 assistance to a number of our children who have special needs. Spencer Eede is returning to Kehila as our full-time educational assistant. She will be working closely with our K-2 teachers and identified children to provide the support needed to enable them to progress as well as possible both academically and socially. Sharon Markowski is our new Resource Teacher. She will be working with both students and teachers to provide remedial and enrichment support to a number of students, either in class or on a withdrawal basis. She will also be working with Spencer, as required to provide additional support.
Our running club will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Morah Lauren and our first run will be the Terry Fox Run on September 15th. Many other activities are being planned throughout the year.

Kehila Jewish Community Day School worked hand-in-hand with the Herschel School in Toronto to develop and implement a Chalutzim Theme program this year. This was part of our integrated curriculum approach where several subjects were used to explore a specific theme. This curriculum approach provided a significant amount of relevance and understanding to the topic at hand. Cutting for a Cause

There are unfortunately people who battle illnesses where the treatment can result in the loss of their hair. As part of the ongoing 2013 Kehila tikkun olam initiative, a group of Kehila girls from grades 2-4 contributed their hair, a combined total of 70 inches, for the creation of wigs for these people as part of the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program which is in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society.
On March 21st, Meaghan and Glynnie, hairstylists from the Maddison Avenue Hair Salon, graciously donated their time and expertise to cut and style the long hair of six grade 2-4 students. In the photo, these students are: Back Row L-R: Emma and Talya and Front Row L-R: Maddie, Miriam, and Olivia. Absent from the photo is Naomi. The entire school body shared in the event by cheering for their friends. Kehila is hoping to continue annually with this program, if our students are willing. Our other tikkun olam projects scheduled for April 22nd, include a food drive for the Kosher Food Bank and an Earth Day garden cleanup.

Mazel Tov to our Kehila students, past and present, who swept the honours in the Morris Black Speaking Competition on Sunday, December 2nd, 2012 at the J.C.C.
All the students at Kehila from grade 3 and up write a speech for the Morris Black competition as part of the integration of secular language studies and Judaic studies every year. They are coached by their teachers in presentations skills as well.
The competition is run by Rick Black, son of Morris Black, who had left money in his will for a contest in which children would write about important figures in Jewish history. Now the students are allowed to choose their own topics.
This year the topics ran the gamut: from Jewish inventions to the holocaust, from the Hebrew Language to ‘my sister’s bat mitzvah', from Jonah and the whale to the history of the Beth Jacob synagogue in Hamilton to a child’s trip to Israel. The childrens’ presentations were as diverse as their chosen topics.
The knowledge, ability, self-confidence and poise of our Kehila students, past and present, are rewarded each year by their success at the competition. Our 2012 winners are: (“past” refers to former Kehila students)
- Grade 3: 1st - Yonina Kleiman; 2nd - Jamie Horwood (past); 3rd - Bram Ogus.
- Grade 4: 1st - Erika Apel; 2nd - Benjamin Avetissian; 3rd - Madelyn Waxman.
- Grade 5: 1st - Maya Earn (past).
- Grade 6: 1st - Ethan Stolar (past); 2nd - Mitchell Horwood (past); 2nd - Zoe Shore (past).
- Grade 8: 1st - Abby Shore (past); 3rd - Sari Horwood (past).

It is with mixed emotions that Kehila JCDS says thank you and goodbye to Francine Lindenbaum. Francine has been Kehila’s administrative assistant since our school opened 13 years ago. In that time, she has brightened our offices with her positive attitude, tremendous organizational skills and her compassion for our students and their parents. Francine was not just a Kehila employee; she was a mentor, a friend and a professional for all these years. She can always be counted on to give good advice, administer a Band-Aid or ice pack, keep balanced records and communicate warmly with everyone that entered our school. Her smile, love and dedication to Kehila, and generosity will be sincerely missed. Francine is off to Toronto to be a SAFTA to her new granddaughter Noa. Mazel Tov to Sarit and Kevin, and to Francine and Moishe.
Thank You and Mazel Tov!
